As a juvenile the fins are much larger than its body and it is taller than it is long. When very young it may be rusty colored all over with dark edges to its fins and a transparent tail, which disguises it as a dead leaf. When it grows a bit larger it has a light cream to yellow colored body with dark vertical bands in an earthy orange. These bands extend through the eye, shoulder
