In the British colonies of Malaya and Burma, the Japanese swept British and Indian forces towards the Indian frontier in what seemed like an unstoppable tide. In the Western Pacific Ocean, the Japanese seized US possessions and dependencies, quickly overwhelming garrisons, even taking the Philippines
