In time, sailors on the Garonne river referred to the area as "Mont Rose", which gave its name to the estate. The 95 hectares vineyard of Chteau Montrose is planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot with vines that are on average close to 40 years of age. It has a hillside terroir of deep gravel, with sand and clay soil.
