though I am unsure if it would have been original to the etui

There are a few exterior surface marks and a couple of small 'ding's on the front edge of the lid (above the lock) but no real chipping

The child is protected under flat glass or I'd wonder if perhaps the slight disruption might have been tears

A pristine veneer over a thick wooden construction, the grain is as beautiful as if it were old tortoise shell, isn't it. Variation in color ranges cognac to chocolate and it's in remarkably fine condition for age. Not a chip! The c. 1830 50 era needlework under glass which is mounted up top is what makes me think it's a sewing or work box. No lock, and a charming turned wood
